What is an MCP server?

An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server exposes tools, resources, and prompts to AI agents like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex over a standard protocol. Skills Over MCP turns any GitHub repo of SKILL.md files into one.

What is a SKILL.md file?

A SKILL.md is a markdown file that teaches an agent how to do a specific task. It has a name and description in YAML frontmatter, plus instructions and examples in the body. Each SKILL.md becomes a tool the agent can call.

Is Skills Over MCP free?

Yes. Skills Over MCP is free and open source. There's no signup, no payment, and no rate limits beyond what GitHub itself imposes on the underlying API.

Can I use a private repo?

Not yet. Only public GitHub repos are supported today. Private repo support requires authentication that isn't wired up in this version.

How fast does it update after I push to GitHub?

Skills Over MCP fetches your repo's tree and SKILL.md files on demand and caches the result for about 5 minutes. New commits show up to your agent within minutes — no redeploy or migration step.

Do I need an account?

No. Paste a repo URL, copy the generated MCP URL, drop it into your agent's MCP config. That's the whole flow.

Does my code leave my repo?

Skills Over MCP reads your SKILL.md files from the public GitHub API and serves them through the MCP protocol on each request. Nothing is stored server-side beyond a short response cache.

Which clients does it work with?

Any MCP-aware client. We have copy-paste snippets for Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex on the homepage; the URL itself works with any client that speaks Streamable HTTP MCP.
